Portugal: The Host Country of the European Universities Handball Championship 2025

In July 2025, Portugal will host the European Universities Handball Championship (EUC Handball 2025), welcoming some of the best university teams in Europe to the city of Covilhã. This event promises to be more than just a sports competition—it will allow athletes and visitors to discover a country whom is rich in history, breathtaking landscapes, and warm hospitality.

A Small Country with a Great History.

Located in the southwest of Europe, Portugal is one of the continent’s oldest nations, with nearly 900 years of history. Despite its relatively small size—approximately 92,000 km²—the country has a population of around 10 million people and a global legacy that spans centuries. During the Age of Discoveries, Portuguese explorers ventured across the world, establishing cultural and trade connections that still shape the nation’s identity today.

The country is divided into mainland Portugal and the Autonomous Regions of the Azores and Madeira, two volcanic archipelagos in the Atlantic Ocean. These islands are known for their unspoiled natural beauty, dramatic mountain landscapes, and mild climate all year round, making them the prime destinations for nature lovers and adventurers.

From north to south, Portugal is a land of diverse regions, each with its own unique identity. Lisbon, the capital, blends tradition and modernity, with its historic neighborhoods, iconic yellow trains, and stunning sunsets over the Tagus River. Oporto, famous for its Port wine and resilient spirit, is home to the picturesque Ribeira district and the striking Luís I Bridge.

Further south, the Alentejo region is where you can find vast golden plains, ancient cork oak trees, and historic cities such as Évora, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Beyond it, the Algarve is renowned for its stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, and dramatic rock formations, making it one of the most sought-after holiday destinations in Europe.

Covilhã and Serra da Estrela: The Stage for EUC Handball 2025

The host city, Covilhã, is nestled in the foothills of Serra da Estrela, the highest mountain range in mainland Portugal. Historically known for its textile industry, Covilhã has evolved into a vibrant university city, thanks to the University of Beira Interior (UBI).

Its privileged location makes it a perfect destination for nature lovers. Serra da Estrela is not only home to Portugal’s only ski resort but also a haven for hiking, trekking, and breathtaking landscapes. It is also the birthplace of the famous cheese, Queijo da Serra, one of Portugal’s most treasured delicacies, known for its creamy texture and rich flavor.

Portugal’s Recent Handball Successes

Handball has been gaining increasing prominence in Portugal, and 2025 has been a year of remarkable achievements. The Men’s National Team continues to establish itself among Europe’s elite, following a solid performance in the 2024 European Championship and a strong presence in international competitions this year. The sport’s development has been evident, with Portugal securing top rankings and showcasing the exceptional talent of its teams and players.

Hosting the EUC Handball 2025 further reinforces Portugal’s commitment to the growth of the sport and its ability to welcome major international competitions.

Portuguese Gastronomy and Hospitality

Beyond sport, visitors to Portugal have the chance to indulge in one of the most diverse and delicious cuisines in Europe. From the many ways of preparing codfish to grilled sardines, Porto’s famous Francesinha, and the legendary Pastel de Nata, Portuguese food is a true journey of flavors. The Queijo da Serra, produced in the Covilhã region, is a highlight of national gastronomy, loved for its soft, buttery texture and distinctive taste.

However, what truly sets Portugal apart is the warmth and hospitality of its people. Known for their friendliness and welcoming nature, the Portuguese ensure that every visit to their country is a memorable experience.

As EUC Handball 2025 approaches, Portugal is ready to open its doors to athletes and fans from across Europe. More than just a competition, this event will be a celebration of culture, history, and a shared passion for sport in a country that, despite its size, leaves a lasting impression on all who visit.
